James Barrat is one of the most authoritative voices on the risks and realities of artificial intelligence. Time Magazine named him one of "5 Very Smart People Who Think Artificial Intelligence Could Bring the Apocalypse.” His predictions - first made in his Amazon #1 bestseller Our Final Invention (2013) - are now headline news worldwide.
A career documentary filmmaker, Barrat has spent decades making complex ideas irresistible to mass audiences. His films have set ratings records for National Geographic, PBS, Discovery Channel, and broadcasters across Europe and Asia. His credits include the National Geographic Specials, The Gospel of Judas, Herod's Lost Tomb, Rise of the Black Pharaohs, and Secrets of Jerusalem's Holiest Sites, as well as the PBS NOVA documentary Extreme Cave Diving and the critically acclaimed Spillover: Zika, Ebola & Beyond. His 2022 PBS feature documentary Facing Suicide, narrated by Josh Charles, launched a national impact campaign and led to a companion book authored by Barrat.
Barrat is the author of three books. The Intelligence Explosion: When AI Beats Humans at Everything (St. Martin's Press, September 2025) is an exposé of generative AI's dangerous emergent powers, the tech industry's reckless race toward AGI, and the urgent case for regulation. His next book, Kill List, will confront the rise of automated warfare powered by advanced AI.
As a speaker, Barrat combines deep technical knowledge with a filmmaker's gift for storytelling. His keynote "Artificial Intelligence: The Promise and Peril," has captivated corporation-sponsored expositions in Sarawak-Malaysia, Dubai, Rome, Ontario, Kazakhstan, Russia, and South Korea.
