James Barrat is one of the most authoritative voices on the risks and realities of artificial intelligence. Time Magazine named him one of "5 Very Smart People Who Think Artificial Intelligence Could Bring the Apocalypse.” His predictions - first made in his Amazon #1 bestseller Our Final Invention (2013) - are now headline news worldwide.

A career documentary filmmaker, Barrat has spent decades making complex ideas irresistible to mass audiences. His films have set ratings records for National Geographic, PBS, Discovery Channel, and broadcasters across Europe and Asia. His credits include the National Geographic Specials, The Gospel of Judas, Herod's Lost Tomb, Rise of the Black Pharaohs, and Secrets of Jerusalem's Holiest Sites, as well as the PBS NOVA documentary Extreme Cave Diving and the critically acclaimed Spillover: Zika, Ebola & Beyond. His 2022 PBS feature documentary Facing Suicide, narrated by Josh Charles, launched a national impact campaign and led to a companion book authored by Barrat.

Barrat is the author of three books. Our Final Invention: Artificial Intelligence and the End of the Human Era (St. Martin’s Press, September 2013) helped establish the genre of AI-risk nonfiction, paving the way for Nick Bostrom's Superintelligence and Max Tegmark's Life 3.0. Elon Musk named it one of five books everyone should read about the future. Facing Suicide: Understanding Why People Kill Themselves and How We Can Stop Them (Penguin Random House September 2024) delivers a groundbreaking examination of America's suicide crisis, profiling survivors and revealing prevention strategies that work. The Intelligence Explosion: When AI Beats Humans at Everything (St. Martin's Press, September 2025) is an exposé of generative AI's dangerous emergent powers, the tech industry's reckless race toward AGI, and the urgent case for regulation. His next book, Kill List, will confront the rise of automated warfare powered by advanced AI.

As a speaker, Barrat combines deep technical knowledge with a filmmaker's gift for storytelling. His keynote "Artificial Intelligence: The Promise and Peril," has captivated corporation-sponsored expositions in Sarawak-Malaysia, Dubai, Rome, Ontario, Kazakhstan, Russia, and South Korea. For university audiences Barrat has delivered keynotes at Purdue University, Davidson College, the University of Richmond, Shepherd University, Georgetown's Kennedy Institute of Ethics, The College of New Jersey, the University of Nevada, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the University of Chicago, among others. In February 2026 Barrat took part in the Oxford Debates supporting the proposition artificial intelligence will be mankind’s final invention.

Barrat probes the questions no one in Silicon Valley wants to answer. Why are black-box AI systems making life-and-death decisions no one can explain? Why are autonomous battlefield robots being developed to take human lives and are hard at work in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran? And what happens when machines become a thousand times more intelligent than humankind?

Barrat has been featured in The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Forbes, the Financial Times, Time Magazine, the Smithsonian Magazine, Science News, and more. He has appeared on PBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, CBC, the BBC World Service, and CCTV.

"Artificial Intelligence: The Promise and Peril" — Barrat's signature keynote. A commanding tour through the real-world risks of advanced AI — autonomous weapons, techno-unemployment, black-box decision-making, and the race to AGI — delivered with a filmmaker's storytelling instinct and a philosopher's rigor. Audiences leave equipped to think critically about the most consequential technology of our time.

"The Intelligence Explosion: What Happens When AI Beats Humans at Everything" — Drawing from his latest book, Barrat reveals how generative AI systems are developing powers their creators never programmed and cannot explain — and why the competition between OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Microsoft is accelerating us toward a crisis. A wake-up call delivered with urgency, evidence, and dark wit.

"Facing Suicide: What We Know, What We Can Do" — A powerful, compassionate presentation grounded in Barrat's PBS documentary and companion book. Barrat shares the stories of survivors, the science behind suicidal brains, and the systems-level approaches that have measurably reduced suicide rates. Actionable, evidence-based, and deeply human.
