He had a brief professional rugby playing career with the Bulls and he also represented the Emerging and Junior Springbok teams.

He utilises his masters degree in Industrial and organisational psychology to inform his work in leadership training, team cohesion and high performance strategy development and implementation.

Joey, grew up in Brits, North West and went on to attend Pretoria Boys High School, where he discovered his love of sport, in particular rugby and cricket. He is currently the Sharks URC Defence Coach/Champions Cup. He is the former Defence Coach of the Lions and Vodacom Bulls rugby teams; winning back to back Currie Cup titles and contesting a URC final with the latter, while coaching in the Super Rugby final with the former club.
